A Type Travel Diary

Main content

The Type Travel Diary began as a collection of typographic findings gathered during my travels between 2017 and 2020. Some of these journeys were undertaken with specific research destinations in mind; others emerged spontaneously, shaped by chance encounters on site. Time and again, a closer look at the typographic details of a city revealed unexpected and compelling discoveries. These observations were complemented by material from my home city of Vienna. In 2020, however, the Covid pandemic brought my travels to an abrupt halt; the final entry at that time reflected on the deserted Vienna Prater during the first lockdown.

In the years that followed, the project receded into the background, as my attention shifted to book and exhibition projects—Mid-century Vienna (2021), Finding Forte (2022)—as well as my role as curatorial lead for the museum project Stadtvilla Eisenstadt (2025).

Now, in 2026, with our transition to a nomadic life in Asia, the Type Travel Diary is set to be revived in a newly relaunched and expanded form. Beyond its original scope, it will increasingly turn its attention to the (gradually diminishing) individuality of urban environments. Many of the local particularities documented here contribute, in their own quiet way, to the distinctive character of these places—yet they remain fragile, and in many cases, at risk of disappearing altogether.
